Student Life

When picking a college to attend there were many aspects of the school that I looked into. Does this school provide me a good education? What extra program does this school offer? And finally, how is the student life? The Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University seemed to offer the best of all of these questions. Life at the Huntsman School of Business provides activities, career accelerators and a quality education.

Throughout the school year many activities are offered at the Huntsman School of Business. There is even a whole week dedicated to the school. During this week there are activities every day. This year they even decorated the school like Hogwarts and call it, Hogwarts School of Business. It is activities like this that make the student life at the Huntsman School of Business great.

One of my favorite resources that the school of business has is its career accelerators. Students are allowed to meet with them to go over resumes and prepare for interviews. This year I have used this resource many times and talked with, Ron Godfrey. When meeting with him, I receive quality advice and help.

The most important thing about the Huntsman School of Business is the quality education that I am receiving. The instructors are well trained and class sizes are not extremely large. These class sizes allow me to meet more students and network with them, aiding the student life. Every summer they offer study abroads that give a students a global perspective that they would not be able to find in any other undergraduate program.

Overall, the Huntsman School of Business has a great student life. There is always something fun and exciting going on. However, at the same time the students are getting a quality education.

Amazon Lockers

Every day my MIS 2100 teacher starts class out with “Tech Talk.” I always find these talks very interesting, as they bring to light new innovations in the technology world. The other day we discussed the new partnership that has formed between 7-Eleven and Amazon. This partnership consist of lockers being put into 7-Eleven locations that can be used as delivery boxes for Amazon’s customers. I think that this is a great idea; these lockers provide flexibility for customers as well as delivery for customers living in unsafe neighborhoods or customers who work during normal home delivery hours.

In today’s business world it is not uncommon for individuals to be travelling on a regular basis. This partnership between 7-Eleven and Amazon enables Amazon’s customers to order items they may need on their next business trip and ship them to a 7-Eleven that is near a hotel they may be staying at on their trip.

I would imagine that many of Amazon’s customers may not live in the safest neighborhoods or are not always home when home deliveries are usually made. By letting customers send deliveries to their nearest 7-Eleven location customers do not have to be worried that their package may be stolen. 7-Elevens provide a safe location for packages to be stored.

Amazon is trying to make delivery easier for customers. As 7-Eleven has many locations, a convenience is given to the customer. I think the idea of placing Amazon delivery lockers in 7-Elevens is a great idea; benefitting Amazon, 7-Eleven, and the customer.

Classroom Presentations

Does your stomach just drop when you hear that you need to give a presentation to your whole class? I know that mine does. Classroom presentations are obviously not going to go away, so I am going to give you a few helpful tips to present more effectively. The first tip being, that you should only put a small amount of information on any slides that are used. The second is that you should know your topic inside and out.

TIP #1-Limited Information on Slides

I know that I personally hate it when a presenter reads their slides word for word. To avoid this kind of hate don’t put everything you are going to say on the slide. Use key phrases or bullets on the slides to keep the audience’s attention. The audience can read the slides much faster than you can read them out loud, and they will get bored. Slide shows act as a nice visual aid to the information that you are presenting, don’t let them be the presentation.

TIP #2- Know Your Topic

Presentations will go much smoother if you actually know what you are presenting on. The audience can tell if you really know what you are talking about or not. As the presenter you want to impress your audience with what you do know about the topic at hand. Obviously, it is unrealistic to know everything, but know all of the basics for sure. This will also help if there is a question and answer section after. You will not be stressed about it as much. The comfort of knowing your topic will help you immensely.

Even though these are just two small tips to help you in a classroom presentation setting, do not overlook them. These two tips can take an average presentation to a great presentation. Remember that if you limit information on slides and know your topic, you’ll do great during you next classroom presentation.

Making Life Easier: Collaboration Technology

Working with groups always seems to be a stressful situation. Will all the group members put the same amount of work into the project? Will all the group members get along? And that final most important question, when will we all find time to get together to work on the project? In recent years the innovation of collaboration technology has made classroom group work so much easier. The question of when will we all find time to get together to work on the project, quickly becomes less important. Group assignments can now be completed with none to very little face to face meetings.

In today’s current technological world there are many collaboration tools that are available for use. These collaboration technologies include but are not limited to Google Docs, Wikispaces and Facebook. These three types of different collaboration tools allow groups to work together, without really being together. For instance Google Docs allows member of groups to review and edit documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings and forms. Instead of all group members having to do this in one meeting when everyone is struggling to be heard, group members can get on when they have the time and give full feedback on the project. Wikispaces is much like Google Docs. Wikispaces provides a space for your group to collaborate together creating the best product possible. One nice feature Wikispaces has that is not found with Google Docs is that is tracks every revision. Thus, allowing the group to see how the current product differs from the revised one. The most popular collaboration technology could arguably be Facebook. With almost all students in the classroom having an account it is easy to create a group where documents can be shared, comments can be posted and questions can be asked.

The stress of classroom group work is decreased through these collaboration technologies. Busy group members do not have to feel like they are not going to be able to do their part in the group project, because they can never find the time to meet. These collaboration technologies balance the playing field and allow all group members to give their input and feedback on the project. Collaboration technologies are greatly beneficial to the classroom group work assignments.
